Ion-Exchange Softening Resin
A polymer bead bed that exchanges hardness ions (Ca, Mg) with sodium ions, reducing water hardness as pre-treatment before RO or boilers.
Ion-Exchange Softening Resin is a polymer bead bed (typically strong acid cation resin in sodium form) used in industrial water softeners. Hardness ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺) in the feed water exchange with sodium ions (Na⁺) on the resin, reducing hardness from raw-water levels (often 200-500 ppm CaCO₃) to < 5 ppm.
When the resin's exchange capacity exhausts, it is **regenerated** by flushing with brine (NaCl solution at ~10%). This restores the resin to sodium form for the next service cycle.
Softening is mandatory pre-treatment for:
- RO membranes (hard water scales membranes)
- Boilers (hard water scales heat-transfer surfaces)
- Cooling towers (hard water scales fills)
- Laundries & process plants
A 5,000 LPH softener typically regenerates every 12-18 hours. Twin-tank units offer continuous service via auto-cross-flow.
