Ozonation

The use of ozone (O₃) gas to disinfect water, standard final-step disinfection in packaged drinking water plants.

Ozonation is the application of dissolved ozone (O₃) to water for microbial disinfection. Ozone is a powerful oxidiser, it inactivates bacteria, viruses, and protozoa rapidly, leaves no chemical residue, and decomposes to oxygen with no taste or odour impact. In packaged drinking water plants, ozonation is the **final disinfection step**, typically following RO + UV. Target residual ozone in the bottled product: 0.2–0.4 ppm at the point of filling. This residual provides both microbial safety and the characteristic "freshness" that BIS audits look for. Ozone is generated on-site using a **corona-discharge ozone generator** sized in g/h. Typical sizing: - 30 BPM: 2 g/h - 60 BPM: 4 g/h - 90 BPM: 8 g/h - 120 BPM: 12 g/h - 240 BPM: 24 g/h (often twin generators for redundancy) Ozone is corrosive and unstable, material selection (SS-316L, PTFE) and an off-gas destructor are mandatory for safety.
