UV Sterilisation
Ultraviolet light (typically 254 nm) used to inactivate microorganisms in water.
UV Sterilisation uses high-intensity ultraviolet light (peak germicidal wavelength: 254 nm) to inactivate bacteria, viruses, and protozoa by disrupting their DNA. Unlike ozone or chlorine, UV adds nothing to the water, it is a "physical" disinfection method.
UV sterilisers are sized in **GPM (gallons per minute)** capacity at a target dose (typically 30–40 mJ/cm² for packaged drinking water). Quartz sleeves house the lamps; fouling reduces effectiveness over time, so quarterly cleaning is required.
UV is typically placed **between** the RO permeate and the storage tank, with ozone applied separately as the final disinfectant before filling. UV alone is not sufficient, it lacks residual disinfection power once water leaves the chamber.
Lamp life: 9,000–12,000 hours (≈12-16 months of continuous operation).
